A little bit about the new badge philosophy. The badges are proficiency badges. They intentionally take time. They are meant to help girls discover more about a topic and develop a skill. (Just like cramming for a test and forgetting the information immediately afterwards, hurrying girls through badge requirements isn’t a lasting way to help them learn!) When girls take time to earn a badge, we need to make sure we really recognize their efforts, and help parents/guardians see the importance of the badge. It’s not about how many badges a girl earns, it’s about the skills she gains!
As Juliette Low said, a badge is a symbol that a girl learned a topic/skill well enough that she can demonstrate it and give service in it. This is the Learning-by-Doing process at its best, and girls should be able to feel pride in what they’ve learned to earn each badge. The message to get out to other volunteers in your service unit is, “Educate, don’t decorate!”
Of course the FUN is critical for girls, but it should be fun with purpose.
